1st Seed Festival - Asoprovida in Ecuador - 2016

In 2016, Asociación Protectora a la Vida - Asoprovida participated in the first Seed Festival in Ecuador, highlighting the crucial role of seeds in agriculture, food production and the empowerment of communities around the world. Seeds have been the cornerstone of agriculture for centuries, with ancient farmers carefully choosing, multiplying and cultivating the best crops to ensure their own survival and the future of humanity.

Today, the diversity of foods available in Ecuador is proof of the power and importance of seeds and knowledge passed down from generation to generation. However, as our society has become more capitalist and consumerist, our relationship with food has changed greatly. Instead of traditional foods, many people opt for quick and easy-to-prepare options without questioning their origin, production methods or nutritional value. It is vital that all stakeholders, including farmers, consumers, governments, academics and society as a whole, engage in debates and discussions to develop effective principles for seed preservation, agriculture and food production.

It is high time to recognise the importance of seeds and the role they play in our collective future. Therefore, the ongoing discussions on a new "Seeds and Agrobiodiversity Act" are crucial for the country and the future of those who depend on a sustainable food system.

All this was the context of this great regional event.
